It calls for using just a few ingredients that you may very well have in your pantry and refrigerator. The recipe I have here is a very basic french toast recipe. While we enjoy French toast here in the US, many other countries have their own versions with different names such as: eggy bread in England, pain perdu (lost bread) in France, fattiga riddare in Sweden, and arme ritter in Germany. Why I Love This RecipeĪt its simplest, French toast is bread that is soaked in liquid (in this case, milk and an egg) before being fried in a skillet. I promise it’ll be worth it.Did you know that french toast is the most requested breakfast recipe at One Dish Kitchen? I love to ask my readers what recipes they would like to see made into single serving versions and every time I ask, a classic french toast recipe has always been at the top of everyone's list. We are often tempted to move things around or press on our french toast, but the best way to cook this is to just let it rock. If you don’t know, DFWI stand for “don’t F with it!”. We’re going to be working over low heat here, so it is important to let it cook for 7 & 1/2 minutes per side. The mistake that is most often made with french toast is not cooking it long enough so that the custard inside is cooked thoroughly. Tip #3: Cook French Toast Over Low Heat for 15 Minutes Total Tip #2: Let The Bread Soak Up The Custardĭip the bread into the custard and let it absorb some until the bread feels spongey. Clarified butter also had a deeper butter flavor. This means that it performs better under higher heat and will not burn as easily. Tip 1: Use Clarified ButterĬlarified butter has a higher smoke point than regular butter since all of the milk solids are removed in the clarifying process. My culinary instructor taught us a few key tips that helped me learn how to make french toast the proper way. If you do not have clarified butter, you can also use regular butter with a little touch of olive oil, just be careful to watch for any burning. Clarified Butter: We’re using enough clarified butter just to coat the bottom of a skillet.Sugar: You’ll only need one tablespoon of sugar for the french toast custard.Spices: The spices I use in this recipe are cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.Vanilla Extract: just a dash of some pure vanilla extract will do.Milk: I’m using about a cup of whole milk here.I like the Brioche Bread from Trader Joe’s. Brioche Bread: I love using brioche because it is thick cut, and it is made up of lots of butter and eggs, so it really compliments this recipe. You’ll need a few ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.

In any case, if you’re currently using Google Chrome but you’re looking for something a bit different, or you’ve been wanting to increase your download speeds while using Chrome (provided you have the bandwidth to do so), I recommend checking out Citrio. While some prefer to use the default Microsoft Edge, there are many who use Chrome or Firefox browser. With Citrio, so far anyway, I’ve logged in to my Google account once and things have stayed connected as I assume they’re supposed to be. What’s more, for me personally, my primary Chrome profile would not stay in sync with my Google account and I constantly had to re-login, which didn’t usually work unless I detached and re-attached my account to a Chrome instance. The reason why Citrio is now my default browser is because it can integrate with your Google account, just like Chrome, and therefore sync your addons, extensions, bookmarks and so forth just like happens with Chrome. A true Chrome browser alternative / replacement The built-in video player was like icing on the cake. I did almost no research on Citrio itself, rather I just downloaded it to try out some download links to see if the speeds improved compared to with Chrome, and they did. While there are probably many more perks to using Citrio over Chrome, I was pleasantly surprised to see that when I downloaded a video using a premium download service, that the video actually played right inside a tab on the browser: This really isn’t meant to be a promotional post for Citrio, rather I see it as an alternative to Google’s Chrome browser, but… I’m pretty pleased with my switch so far. I was using my home made SnS so I thought maybe that was the issue or a combination of a few things. I was actualy quite dissapointed because of all the hype on the weber kettles for low and slow. I had a hard time controlling the temperature swing. I ran out of kingsford so I was using up what I had left of the RO for this cook. This was my first low and slow on my new mastertouch so I'm still learning on it. It seems to give me extremly stable temperature control and longer burn times. Through lots of trial and error, I now only use the kingsford in my UDS. By KBB are you refering to the kingsford original blue/white bag? In my UDS I have tried the blue bag RO lump, red bag RO birquetts and Kingsford original blue/white bag. It's a coincidence that you posted this now because I just smoked a pork shoulder the other day on my master touch and used the red bag royal oak birquetts and had a hell of a time trying the stabilize temps. Since KBB doesn't bother me, and I didn't notice an improvement in taste, I'm inclined to stay with KBB, but that's pending a few more test runs with Royal Oak.įeel free to ask questions, I'm sure I left some things out. Overall, I want to try it again to see what happens. I didn't get scientific and measure amounts-just giving it the eyeball test. It produced approximately the same amount of ash, and I'm left with about the same amount of charcoal to re-use the next cook. Total cook time was a bit longer than usual, but that's a product of my temps yo-yo-ing for a while. For me, there wasn't any noticeable difference in food quality. I was very curious to see if I could since I've always used KBB and I know some people are very unhappy with it. It wasn't windy, and the temps were in the mid 60's outside. Just weird I couldn't get the WSM to settle down. Not sure what to think.maybe I got a bad bag. It started dropping after 2.5 hours, so I reopened all 3 vents to maintain 250 for the remainder of the cook. I then slowly closed each vent to insure it would stay at 250. I had to open all 3 lower vents almost 1/2 for over an hour to get it back to 250. ![]() The Royal Oak would not come back up to temperature after I added the ribs. I run with the top vent open, and one bottom vent 1/3 open to achieve those temps. Obviously, it will drop a bit when adding the meat, but it goes right back to the 240-250 range and stays there for HOURS. My WSM usually runs rock solid between 240-250, with water, and a full ring. This is where things got a bit interesting. It took about 45 mins for the smoker to settle in around 240 and I put on 3 racks of BB ribs I had picked up from Restaurant Depot. First off, it definitely has a different smell than KBB when 1st lit. I fired up my 22.5 WSM, with water in the pan, packed the charcoal ring full with a full bag(15 lbs), and off we went. That being said, I'm always up to try something new. I fire it up, let it burn down to TBS, and start cooking. ![]() Personally, I've never had an issue with KBB. ![]() I have always used KBB, but with Lowe's having Royal Oaks' briquettes on sale, I figured I'd buy a few bags(4) and give them a try. Thanks to the Brethern, I found out about the recent charcoal sales at Walmart and Lowe's. ![]() And if you keep following what interests and excites you, then you won’t get bored. It acts a reminder – in a big visual, always visible way – of what interests you. In art the possibilities are endless, so having a gentle way to keep you aligned can be a big help. It may not contain details, but it gives you an overall feeling and a visual way to play with what you would like to create… things which will make you feel proud and excited to create! Why does this help? ![]() In this sense a mood board gives you a way to guide the choices you make. You’re probably familiar with interior design mood boards – designers use them to bring together ideas for a new room scheme – they can include swatches, visuals and samples. It’s good to refresh this and I had become so used to looking at it, that my eyes passed over it and it was no longer serving its purpose. Pointing to her own cottage in development, she laughs that a physical mood board “will help me explain to my husband what I want. One of the things which helps me in the studio is a ‘mood board’ for my art. “I’m collecting images there, but I still print it out before putting it all together, as you can over-collect, and you have to refine it.”īottom line: Be prepared with a cohesive vision, especially while working with a client-whether that person is an Emmy-winning director or yourself. “Right now, I’m making my own garden in a 300-year-old cottage, and I do have a Pinterest,” she says. And the Bridgerton set decorator is currently putting that advice to work-for herself. “Stick to the key elements.” And be ruthless with your editing: “Reject the things you don’t think you’ll use, be clear about what you want, make sure you decide clearly which look you’re going for.”īringing a crystal clear idea to a client will help you in the long run. “Don’t pull it out of thin air,” she says. Her advice is to think long and hard about the pieces you select. ![]() Whether you use photographs, illustrations, or even Polaroids snapped in furniture stores or prop houses, she says, planning is critical. We had a whole collection of hilariously small things we always ended up using somewhere, like the nursery.”īut long before putting the finishing details into a room, Cromwell recommends sticking to the key elements on a mood board. “Sometimes when you order things online, they arrive on a tiny scale. Dimensions, in particular, proved tricky when ordering pieces remotely. “I don’t know if we would have done that if we had the option to go to antique markets,” she points out. But then, says Cromwell, “the script changed and we had to pivot.” With the introduction of the Sharma family in season two, she says, “we needed a new color.”Ĭromwell and her team furnished the sets while shooting during lockdown, so much of the furniture and accessories was bought on antiques websites. To start, that meant a pastel terra-cotta shade, a pistachio green, and an apricot hue. “We allocated colors to different families like football teams, so the audience knows where they are right away in season one,” Cromwell explains. She started with base colors for each family in the show. You must get yourself excited on each new set as it comes along.” “It’s a lot of people going to parties and balls. “You must fill the well endlessly to reinspire yourself, especially with a show that’s repetitive in what it does,” she says. To Cromwell, the goal is to stay true to the vision of the mood board, but allow room for experimentation before arriving at a final look. Set rules-but leave space for development and trying new things. “It has to be a mix between practicality and goals,” she says. “We play with it until we get it to a point that’s achievable.”Ĭromwell and her team don’t overload mood boards with images she considers “entirely fanciful”-instead, she suggests sticking to the basics of what makes a room shine. “When we start with research for the rooms, we get samples of colors, there’s a lot of removing and adding,” Cromwell says. Since this is steel, the ships used typically date back to World War I or World War II. ![]() Low-background steel is the most famous kind of low-background metal, used in real life for highly sensitive particle detectors in physics and medicine, and is salvaged from ships sunk before 1945 (the Trinity nuclear test). In the movie Back to the Future, when Marty tells Doc that the time machine runs on plutonium, Doc exclaims, "I'm sure that in 1985, plutonium is available at every corner drug store, but in 1955, it's a little hard to come by" (from this transcript). In the movie Avengers: Endgame, time travel is used to retrieve minerals important to a future plan. In the book Timeline, time travel is used to record historical events for entertainment purposes. In the Star Trek movie The Voyage Home, time travel is used to retrieve whales and transport them to the present. Frequently, it is done with the goal of making money, but other purposes are used as well. Using time travel to retrieve items from the past that are not available in the present is a frequent trope in time travel-related media. However, while this might be a pragmatic solution, going back in time to sink ships and murder the occupants doesn't seem like a particularly morally acceptable solution, not to mention opening up potential time travel paradoxes such as what if one of the ship occupants killed was an ancestor to one of the protagonists? If this were a real scenario, there would probably be less drastic solutions available, such as purchasing quantities of lead from the time (would need to convincingly impersonate a local and have something that could be used as currency) and dropping them in the ocean from a (rented) non-destroyed ship, which as a bonus eliminates the need to extract it from the charred remains of a ship later. They could also specifically target ships that were in waters that are well-suited for salvage operations. This would both provide for many more shipwrecks to salvage, and give the team a good idea of where those wrecks were, when they returned to modern times. The team realizes (apparently at Black Hat's suggestion), that a solution is to use their single trip to take modern military hardware back to the era of the Roman Empire and use it to sink multiple ships. Megan mentions that they have only enough for a single trip. The number of shipwrecks of that age that can be found and successfully salvaged for metal is quite small, which puts this material in short supply. Because it has spent many centuries continually underwater, it is both shielded from radioactive particles, and has had time for natural radioactivity to fade. When it is extracted, lead is naturally contaminated with the radioactive isotope Pb-210, with a 22 year half-life. The Roman lead was produced before atmospheric nuclear tests occurred and therefore did not have resulting radionuclides in the air used in its manufacture. Lead ingots from Roman cargo have been used in experiments. In order to shield this equipment, "low-background metal" is salvaged from sunken ships. Megan explains that, while delicate equipment is often shielded from radiation by lead, metal produced in modern times is contaminated by nuclear fallout in the atmosphere, which means that the shielding itself has enough radioactivity to interfere with highly delicate equipment. However, Megan and Black Hat's machine requires the use of "low-background" metal, which is in short supply. Time travel is a common trope in science fiction, and specifically here on xkcd, and such a discovery would be likely to change the world as we know it. In this comic, a team including Megan and Black Hat who have invented a time travel machine presents it and their problems to Cueball. ![]() ![]() Title text: The only effect on the history books were a few confusing accounts of something called 'Greek fire.'
